I would like to share with all of you a quote from my favorite Marine Biologist: Rachel Carson. Rachel was a pioneer in describing the marine ecosystem through literature, and with her book "The Silent Spring" was the first to write a novel about the impacts of the use of pesticides on biodiversity and humans in the decade of the 50s and 60s in the U.S. This novel launched the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the environmental movement.
"The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction" Rachel Carson
Rachel is an inspiration for me because she choose to write about the world around us, and translate science into a language everyone could understand. As Malala Yousafzai says "Education is education. We should learn everything and then choose which path to follow." That is why as a Marine Biologist I have a really important role in society: talk to you about the unknown wonders of the ocean, show you how great it is, why it is so important, what are our actions that impact at it the most, and mainly why we are part of it.
As I like to say, you have to get the "marine bug" in order to feel like you belong in the ocean and create a sense of conservation and responsible use of resources.
Now more than ever, in this moment where it is advised not to stay at home, we lose contact with nature completely. That is why, through these weekly blogs, I would like to share activities with you, which you can do as a family, in order to learn a little bit more about this wonderful ecosystem that covers 70% of our planet and provides us with more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
And hopefully, when we have more clarity about the wonders of the nature that surrounds us, we become more aware of the actions we perform and be able to change certain attitudes in order to conserve an ecosystem that do a lot for us.
Let´s get into this adventure together!
Excellent!!!
